Recovered historical report
On the return from Banu Mustaliq, ‘A’ishah was left behind when she went to look for a lost necklace. Safwan bin al-Mu‘attal, who was lagging, found her and brought her back. The hypocrites spread lies that she had committed adultery. The Prophet ﷺ was deeply troubled. ‘A’ishah’s parents, Abu Bakr and Umm Ruman, advised her to be patient. After a month, Allah revealed ten verses in Surah al-Nur declaring ‘A’ishah’s innocence. The slanderers were flogged. The lesson was clear: guard your tongue, assume the best of believers, and never spread rumours.

Revisit context: Abu Bakr swore to cut aid to Mistah, but Allah revealed: “Do not let those of virtue among you swear not to give to their relatives.” Abu Bakr resumed giving.
