Nu‘aym bin Mas‘ud was a leader from Ghatafān who had secretly become Muslim. His people did not know. He went to the Prophet ﷺ and offered to help. The Prophet ﷺ said, “You are only one man. Deceive them for us if you can, for war is deception.” Nu‘aym went to Banu Qurayzah and told them that the Quraish and Ghatafān would abandon them if the battle dragged on. He advised them to demand hostages from the Quraish as a guarantee. Then he went to the Quraish and told them that Banu Qurayzah had regretted their betrayal and would ask for hostages to hand over to Muhammad. The Quraish refused to give hostages, and suspicion spread. The alliance crumbled.
