Recovered historical report
The Prophet ﷺ learned that a rich Quraishi caravan led by Abu Sufyan was returning from Syria. He gathered 313–317 men to intercept it. The Muslims were poorly equipped: only two horses, 70 camels (shared by three men each), and some swords. Abu Sufyan, alerted, diverted the caravan and sent a message to Makkah: “Your caravan is safe. Go back.” But Abu Jahl insisted on proceeding to Badr to flex Quraishi power. The Quraishi army of 950 men, 200 horses, and 600 coats of mail advanced. The Muslims were outnumbered three to one.
