‘Umar was a fierce enemy of Islam. One day, he set out to kill the Prophet ﷺ. On the way, he learned that his own sister Fatimah and her husband Sa‘id had become Muslim. He went to their house, beat them, but when he saw blood on his sister’s face, he relented and asked to see the scroll they were reading – Surah Taha. The words moved him. He went to the Prophet ﷺ at Dar al-Arqam and declared his Islam. The Muslims shouted “Allahu Akbar” so loudly it was heard throughout Makkah. ‘Umar’s Islam was a turning point. The Muslims could now pray openly.
