Recovered historical report
One night, while in the cave, the angel Jibril appeared to the Prophet ﷺ and commanded, “Iqra!” (Read/Recite). The Prophet replied, “I am not a reader.” Jibril squeezed him three times, then revealed the first five verses of Surah Al-‘Alaq. The Prophet ﷺ was terrified. He rushed home to Khadijah, trembling, and said, “Cover me! Cover me!” She wrapped him and reassured him. She took him to her cousin Waraqah bin Naufal, a Christian scholar, who confirmed that this was the same angel who came to Moses. Waraqah said, “Would that I were a young man when your people drive you out.”
