Recovered historical report
When the Prophet ﷺ was six years old, his mother Āminah took him to visit his father’s grave in Madinah. On the return journey, she fell ill and died at a place called Abwa’. The Prophet ﷺ was now an orphan. His grandfather ‘Abdul Muttalib took custody of him, loved him dearly, and would place him on his bedding. When ‘Abdul Muttalib died two years later (the Prophet was eight), the Prophet ﷺ wept and kissed his grandfather’s face before burial. Custody then passed to his uncle Abū Tālib.
