Recovered historical report
After Hajj, the Prophet ﷺ returned to Madinah. He fell ill with a severe fever. He asked permission from his wives to stay in ‘A’ishah’s room. In his final days, he continued to lead prayers until he could not. He ordered Abu Bakr to lead. He said, “Allah offered me the choice between the treasures of this world and meeting Him, and I chose meeting Him.” On Monday, 12 Rabi‘ al-Awwal, he was in ‘A’ishah’s lap. He said, “The highest companion,” and passed away. The Companions were in shock. ‘Umar refused to believe it. Abu Bakr came, uncovered the Prophet’s face, kissed him, and said, “Whoever worshipped Muhammad, Muhammad is dead. Whoever worships Allah, Allah is alive and never dies.”
