Recovered historical report
The Prophet ﷺ sent a messenger to the ruler of Busra (in Syria). He was killed by a local governor. This was a violation of diplomatic immunity. The Prophet ﷺ raised an army of 3,000 men, led by Zayd bin Harithah, then Ja‘far bin Abi Talib, then ‘Abdullah bin Rawahah. They marched to Mu’tah and faced a massive Roman army of 200,000. The three commanders were all killed. The army then chose Khalid bin al-Walid as their leader. Khalid, a brilliant strategist, reorganised the army and conducted a tactical retreat, saving the Muslims from annihilation. He broke nine swords in his hand that day. The Romans did not pursue.
