Abrahah, the Christian ruler of Yemen, built a magnificent cathedral in San‘a’ to divert pilgrims from the Ka‘bah. An Arab defecated in it, enraging Abrahah. He marched to Makkah with a huge army, including war elephants. ‘Abdul Muttalib met him, demanded his 200 camels back, and said, “I am the owner of the camels. The House has its own Lord who will protect it.” Abrahah’s elephant refused to move toward Makkah. Allah sent flocks of birds carrying stones of baked clay, destroying the army. This was the Year of the Elephant – the year the Prophet ﷺ was born.
