Recovered historical report
The Quraish wanted revenge for Badr. They raised an army of 3,000 men, 200 horses, and 700 coats of mail. The Prophet ﷺ initially wanted to defend Madinah from within, but the young Muslims insisted on meeting the enemy outside. He agreed reluctantly. He took 1,000 men, but ‘Abdullah bin Ubayy withdrew with 300, leaving 700. The Prophet ﷺ placed 50 archers on a hill (Mount ‘Aynayn) with strict orders: do not leave, whether we win or lose. He told them, “Protect our backs.”
