Recovered historical report
The battle began with three duels. ‘Utbah, his son al-Walid, and his brother Shaybah challenged the Muslims. ‘Ubaydah bin al-Harith, Hamzah, and ‘Ali responded. Hamzah and ‘Ali killed their opponents quickly. ‘Ubaydah was wounded but finished off by ‘Ali and Hamzah. The general battle then erupted. The Muslims fought with discipline while the Quraish were arrogant. The Prophet ﷺ threw a handful of dust toward the enemy, saying “Shahat al-wujuh” (May faces be disgraced). It struck every Quraishi eye. The Muslims killed 70 and captured 70. Only 14 Muslims died.
