Metacognition: check the method, not only the feeling

Metacognition here means observing how you are learning: what you predicted, what you could actually retrieve or perform, where errors appeared, and what method change the evidence suggests.

Prediction before practice

Before a session or test, write what you expect to know or do. This creates a comparison point. The goal is not to prove confidence right or wrong; it is to notice calibration between expectation and result.

Evidence after practice

Afterward, record what you could do without help, what required prompts, what was incorrect, and what still feels unclear. Familiarity can feel strong even when independent use is weak, so the result should come from a task, retrieval attempt, or other observable performance.

Method decisions should be reversible

If a method seems weak, change one meaningful variable where practical—practice type, source, timing, feedback, environment, difficulty, or review frequency—then observe the next result. Avoid rebuilding the whole learning system after one bad session.

A personal pattern is not a diagnosis

Learning logs may reveal repeated patterns, but they do not diagnose attention disorders, memory disorders, neurological conditions, mental-health conditions, intelligence, or a fixed 'learning style.' Where health, disability, or formal assessment matters, use appropriate qualified support.

  3. What one change is worth testing next?
